Rings Thing 8
July 16, 2002 | 12:50 a.m.

I'm back, just in time for this week's Rings Thing.

I will write another entry tomorrow at some point, or maybe Wednesday. I think the break has ben very helpful, I now feel that I have a few things to say. Yes, they are all superficial and most people could go to the toilet and come back having thought up one of my entries, but I'm a perfectionist. So.

That's not to say my entries are perfect. I just want them to be, and worry that they're not. Onward.

You occasionally hear the charge that FOTR is, in essence, "an action movie" dressed up in Middle Earth garb, and has lost the epic scope of the books. There is also the opposite charge: that there isn't enough action in the film, that people got a bit restless in parts. Any truth to either?

I thought it was epic. Now I've had chance to really think about it (since I haven't seen it since January) I'm of the opinion that it had epicness, definitely. Of course, it could have been more epic - I see what people mean when they say it doesn't have all the scope of the books, but they are a very hard act to follow. I do think that those who expect the movies to be exactly the same as the books are missing the point somewhat.

Not enough action? I suppose it depends. If you know you're going to get bored watching a three hour movie about elves and hobbits, don't go to see the fucking thing, it's as simple as that. If you know you're going to find a movie about the above ridiculous in the extreme and therefore loudly take the piss for the entire three hours, don't go to see it either. I'm digressing. I didn't get restless, though I don't know how I would have felt if I hadn't read the book beforehand. I think I could have sustained my interest though. I'm good at that.

Nothing to do with these questions, but I saw a trailer on TV today which started with the New Line logo, so I got excited, but guess what it was for? Fucking Austin Powers: Goldmember. Why can't they throw that out in December? It does got points for Seth Green though, I have to say.

I need sleep. If I don't finish this now, it's going to get even more bizarre.

PS. Yay, I'm back in Diaryland! I'm sure you'll agree the place hasn't been the same without me.

*crickets chirp*

Oh well.
