laughter in the dark

we were overdue for a right royal fuck up
April 07, 2003 | 1:50 a.m.

I got my form from the local authority about student loans and fee payments for next year. The whole applying for uni process had been going so smoothly up to now that I was starting to get suspicious - not without reason either, since they sent me someone else's information by mistake, someone who's name differs from mine by one letter. Odd, I didn't think there would be anyone else with my name anywhere, and it's weirder still since this girl lives like, five miles away.

I have the right documentation now though, and I've filled in my bits of the form (the parents have to fill in the other bit, about tax and other stuff I don't understand). The maximum you can get is £4,930 for one academic year if you're going to be in London, which I am. The rent will be something like £80 a week, including bills, so I'm wondering if I'm going to be comfortable or living on beans on toast. I really have no idea of how much it costs to, well, live. If I get a job I suppose I'll be okay.

The form asks if you're a member of a religious order, and if so, are you living with that order? There's also a question about whether or not you have any income from lettings, rents or property, and other such laughable scenarios. I was snorting and muttering 'I wish' and 'not bloody likely' the entire time. I'm sure I sounded quite insane.

I need to find out if I have to pay rent over the summer if I'm not living in - what do people do over the summer, anyway? Live at home? I won't be doing that if I can possibly avoid it. Go to Thailand or somewhere? Isn't that the done thing? Though, I guess the possibility of catching super!flu and dying needs to be factored into that equation somewhere.

I'll pick fruit somewhere, get a tan. Why not? I tend to have a problem actually tanning, but that's not the point.
